Case
About the Company
Octopus Energy was founded in 2016 to accelerate the global energy transition through technology. The award-winning company is the fastest-growing private company in the UK and serves over five million customers worldwide. Its AI platform, Kraken, automates large parts of energy supply, enabling top-tier customer service and high efficiency. Since 2020, Octopus has been operating in Germany as the first tech-based energy provider and is now present in 14 countries. Through licensing agreements, approximately 30 million energy accounts are managed via Kraken.

Initial Situation
As the first tech-based green energy provider, Octopus Energy aimed to offer its customers in Germany a straightforward, independent aggregation solution for electricity from private photovoltaic systems. The challenge was to meet the complex requirements of the German energy market regarding market communication, contract management, and billing while also providing a dynamic feed-in tariff that allows customers to maximize the use of their green technologies.
Goal
By aggregating photovoltaic electricity generated on their own rooftops, households should not only benefit from sustainable self-consumption but also from attractive earning opportunities offered by a dynamic feed-in tariff. Additionally, Octopus Energy aims to provide a simple, manufacturer-independent solution with this offering to increase the acceptance and adoption of photovoltaic systems.
Solution
Lumenaza GmbH provides the platform and manages the virtual power plant, market communication, contract management and billing. All processes and customer communication are carried out on behalf of Octopus Energy.
This makes Octopus Energy the first electricity provider in Germany to offer manufacturer-independent small-scale aggregation. Customers can choose between market premium aggregation and other direct marketing options.
»With dynamic feed-in tariffs, we are taking the next step toward becoming a one-stop shop for climate-friendly energy. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for our customers to unlock the full potential of their green technologies. That’s why we offer everything from dynamic consumption and feed-in tariffs to smart meter installations and intelligent networking solutions.«
Andrew Mack, CEO of Octopus Energy Germany
Result
Households with battery systems, in particular, can fully unlock the potential of their PV system and home storage with this end-to-end solution. These customers not only reduce their electricity costs but can also generate additional income through aggregation.
